The treatment in this case must be fast. The aim is to reduce intraocular pressure rapidly in the shortest possible time, as the pressure so high for these types of glaucoma can damage the optic nerve very quickly. This can be used antihypertensive drugs (administered by topical, oral or intravenous), laser or surgery.
Drug treatment
- Systemic carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, eg acetazolamide.
- Eyedrops (pilocarpine): these drops reduce the size of the pupil, it is necessary to allow the aqueous humor flow returns to normal. Can also use other drops above for primary open-angle glaucoma.Laser Treatment (iridotomy)
It is important to make a hole in the iris (colored part of eye) to prevent the disorder from occurring again. It is necessary to treat both eyes, as though only one affected, the other will continue to develop acute angle closure if left untreated.
Surgical
Sometimes none of the above treatments can control the pressure and, therefore, a trabeculectomy may be necessary (as mentioned earlier in the primary open-angle glaucoma).
